CONFIRMED: LA’s 8.3 Million Square Feet of Stages Shows Why Design Is Only Half the Equation
SOCIALBILITTY TRADE DESK / CONFIRMED / Research verified October 17, 2026
FilmLA’s 2026 soundstage research distinguishes total inventory from certified stage space—and explains a core facility-data metric.
What is established
FilmLA’s March 2026 soundstage research estimated Los Angeles County had approximately 8.3 million square feet of total soundstage space, including 6.9 million square feet of certified space. Seventeen participating studio organizations in the survey represented around three-quarters of the certified inventory. The report also noted new East End Studios and Cinespace campuses opened during the first quarter.

Soundstage inventory: total versus certified
FilmLA estimated 8.3M sq ft total. Bars show portions of that total, not stage occupancy.
Read figures and project milestones with their stated scope. Illustrative archival photos are not evidence of current bookings or crew openings.
What this means for production
A building’s nominal size cannot be treated as equivalent to available, bookable stages. Production design also depends on acoustic separation, grid capacity, lighting and mechanical power, truck access, shops, production offices, fire-safety provisions and certification. The distinction between existing infrastructure and actual occupancy is crucial when assessing whether a studio expansion will create film employment.
What to verify next
Keep separate metrics for total square footage, certified square footage, participant-verified stage utilization, project count and actual shoot days. Compare change over time only when the same reporting definition and sample are used.
Data point
FilmLA March 2026 estimate: 8.3M square feet total; 6.9M certified.
Evidence note: Unless an official employer opening is explicitly verified, this Trade Desk brief does not establish an open crew position or guarantee future work.
